There was confusion at this, even Professor Quirrell looked puzzled; but the Headmaster finally acceded, since it didn't seem likely that Harry could be hurt through four Patronuses. Harry didn't say it out loud, for obvious reasons.	Гарри, по очевидной причине, не стал говорить этого вслух.
And they began to walk toward the Dementor.	Они пошли в сторону дементора.
"Headmaster," Harry said, "suppose the Ravenclaw door asked you this riddle: What lies at the center of a Dementor?	- Директор, - сказал Гарри, - представьте, что дверь Когтеврана задала вам загадку: "Что кроется в центре дементора?".
What would you say?"	Что бы вы сказали?
"Fear," said the Headmaster.	- Страх, - ответил директор.
It was a simple enough mistake.	Это была достаточно понятная ошибка.
The Dementor approached, and the fear came over you.	Вот приближается дементор, и вместе с ним приходит страх.
The fear hurt, you felt the fear weakening you, you wanted the fear to go away.	Страх ранит, человек чувствует, что слабеет от страха, хочет, чтобы страх исчез...
It was natural to think the fear was the problem.	Естественно думать, что вся проблема в страхе.
So they'd concluded that the Dementor was a creature of pure fear, that there was nothing there to fear but fear itself, that the Dementor couldn't hurt you if you weren't afraid...	Поэтому считается, что дементор - создание чистого страха, что в нём нет ничего страшного, кроме самого страха, что дементор не может навредить тебе, если ты не боишься...
But...	Но...
What lies at the center of a Dementor?	Что кроется в центре дементора?
Fear.	Страх.
What is so horrible that the mind refuses to see it?	Что настолько ужасно, что разум отказывается это видеть?
Fear.	Страх.
What is impossible to kill?	Что невозможно убить?
Fear.	Страх.
...it didn't quite fit, once you thought about it.	...если подумать, это не слишком похоже на отгадку.
Though it was clear enough why people would be reluctant to look beyond the first answer.	Хотя вполне очевидно, почему люди не спешили придумывать другие ответы.
People understood fear.	Страх понятен.
