He stood there helplessly, his brain refusing to work properly as the dog edged away from the corner, then scuttled underneath the workbench. An idea finally came. Neville moved to his bed quickly and pulled off the top blanket. Returning to the bench, he crouched down and looked under it. "All right, boy," he said. "All right."	- Все хорошо, малыш, - сказал Нэвилль, - все хорошо.
The dog shrank back as Neville stuck the blanket underneath the bench and then stood up.	- Он комом пропихнул одеяло под верстак, и пес вжался в стену еще сильнее.
Neville went over to the door and remained there a minute looking back.	Нэвилль встал, отошел к двери и постоял минуту, беспомощно размышляя.
If only I could do something, he thought helplessly.	О, если бы я мог что-нибудь сделать.
But I can't even get close to him.	Но мне даже не приблизиться к нему.
Well, he decided grimly, if the dog didn't accept him soon, he'd have to try a little chloroform.	Если пес скоро не смирится, - подумал он, -придется попробовать хлороформ.
Then he could at least work on the dog, fix its paw and try somehow to cure it.	Тогда, по крайней мере, можно будет осмотреть его лапу и, может быть, подлечить его.
He went back to the kitchen but he couldn't eat.	Он вернулся на кухню, но есть не смог.
Finally he dumped the contents of his plate into the garbage disposal and poured the coffee back into the pot.	В конце концов он вывалил содержимое своей тарелки в мусор, а кофе слил обратно в кофейник.

The dog had dug itself under the folds of the blanket and there it was still shaking, whining ceaselessly.	Пес закопался в складки одеяла и жался там, дрожа и беспомощно скуля.
No use trying to work on it now, he thought; it's too frightened.	Нет смысла сейчас пытаться что-то сделать с ним, - подумал Нэвилль, - он слишком перепуган.
He walked back to the bed and sat down. He ran his hands through his hair and then put them over his face.	Нэвилль отошел к своей кровати и сел, запустив пальцы в свои густые волосы, затем закрыл ладонями лицо.
Cure it, cure it, he thought, and one of his hands bunched into a fist to strike feebly at the mattress.	- Вылечить его, вылечить, - повторял он, и руки его сжались в кулаки.
Reaching out abruptly, he turned off the light and lay down fully clothed.	Он внезапно встал, погасил свет и, не раздеваясь, лег в постель.

Silence.	Тишина.
