"And why were you obliged to shut up Polashka?" his wife asked him.	- А для чего ж было тебе запирать Палашку? -спросила комендантша.
"Why was the poor girl obliged to stay in the kitchen till we came back?"	- За что бедная девка просидела в чулане, пока мы не воротились?
Iv?n Kouzmitch was not prepared for such a question; he stammered some incoherent words.	- Иван Кузмич не был приготовлен к таковому вопросу; он запутался и пробормотал что-то очень нескладное.
Vassilissa Igorofna instantly understood that her husband had deceived her, but as she could not at that moment get anything out of him, she forebore questioning him, and spoke of some pickled cucumbers which Akoulina Pamphilovna knew how to prepare in a superlative manner.	Василиса Егоровна увидела коварство своего мужа; но зная, что ничего от него ни добьется, прекратила свои вопросы и завела речь о соленых огурцах, которые Акулина Памфиловна приготовляла совершенно особенным образом.
All night long Vassilissa Igorofna lay awake trying to think what her husband could have in his head that she was not permitted to know.	Во всю ночь Василиса Егоровна не могла заснуть, и никак не могла догадаться, что бы такое было в голове ее мужа, о чем бы ей нельзя было знать.
The morrow, on her return from mass, she saw Iw?n Ignatiitch busy clearing the cannon of the rags, small stones, bits of wood, knuckle-bones, and all kinds of rubbish that the little boys had crammed it with.	На другой день, возвращаясь от обедни, она увидела Ивана Игнатьича, который вытаскивал из пушки тряпички, камушки, щепки, бабки и сор всякого рода, запиханный в нее ребятишками.
"What can these warlike preparations mean?" thought the Commandant's wife. "Can it be that they are afraid of an attack by the Kirghiz; but then is it likely that Iv?n Kouzmitch would hide from me such a trifle?"	"Что бы значили эти военные приготовления?" -думала комендантша: - "уж не ждут ли нападения от киргизцев? Но неужто Иван Кузмич стал бы от меня таить такие пустяки?"
She called Iw?n Ignatiitch, determined to have out of him the secret which was provoking her feminine curiosity.	Она кликнула Ивана Игнатьича, с твердым намерением выведать от него тайну, которая мучила ее дамское любопытство.
Vassilissa Igorofna began by making to him some remarks on household matters, like a judge who begins a cross-examination by questions irrelevant to the subject in hand, in order to reassure and lull the watchfulness of the accused.	Василиса Егоровна сделала ему несколько замечаний касательно хозяйства, как судия, начинающий следствие вопросами посторонними, дабы сперва усыпить осторожность ответчика.
Then, after a few minutes' silence, she gave a deep sigh, and said, shaking her head -	Потом, помолчав несколько минут, она глубоко вздохнула и сказала качая головою:
"Oh! good Lord!	"Господи боже мой!

"Eh! my little mother," replied Iw?n Ignatiitch; "the Lord is merciful. We have soldiers enough, and much, powder; I have cleared the cannon.	- И, матушка! - отвечал Иван Игнатьич. - Бог милостив: солдат у нас довольно, пороху много, пушку я вычистил.
