They grumbled aloud, and Iw?n Ignatiitch, who executed the Commandant's orders, heard them with his own ears say pretty clearly -	Они громко роптали, и Иван Игнатьич, исполнитель комендантского распоряжения, слышал своими ушами, как они говорили:
"Only wait a bit, you garrison rat!"	"Вот ужо тебе будет, гарнизонная крыса!"
The Commandant had intended to cross-examine his prisoner that same day, but the "ouriadnik" had escaped, doubtless with the connivance of his accomplices.	Комендант думал в тот же день допросить своего арестанта; но урядник бежал из-под караула, вероятно при помощи своих единомышленников.
Another thing occurred to augment the Commandant's disquiet; a Bashkir was taken bearing seditious letters.	Новое обстоятельство усилило беспокойство коменданта. Схвачен был башкирец с возмутительными листами.
Upon this occasion the Commandant decided upon assembling his officers anew, and in order to do that he wished again to get rid of his wife under some plausible pretext.	По сему случаю комендант думал опять собрать своих офицеров, и для того хотел опять удалить Василису Егоровну под благовидным предлогом.
But as Iv?n Kouzmitch was one of the most upright and sincere of men he could not think of any other way than that which he had already employed on a previous occasion.	Но как Иван Кузмич был человек самый прямодушный и правдивый то и не нашел другого способа, кроме как единожды уже им употребленного.
"Do you know, Vassilissa Igorofna," said he to her, while clearing his throat once or twice, "it is said that Father Garosim has received from the town -" "Hold your tongue," interrupted his wife; "you want again to call a council of war, and talk without me about Emelian Pugatch?f; but you will not deceive me this time."	"Слышь ты, Василиса Егоровна", - сказал он ей покашливая. - "Отец Герасим получил, говорят, из города..." - Полно врать, Иван Кузмич, -перервала комендантша; ты, знать, хочешь собрать совещание, да без меня потолковать об Емельяне Пугачеве; да лих не проведешь!
Iv?n Kouzmitch opened his eyes wide.	- Иван Кузмич вытаращил глаза.
"Well, little mother," said he, "if you know all, stay; there is nothing more to be done, we will talk before you."	"Ну, матушка", - сказал он - "коли ты уже все знаешь, так пожалуй оставайся; мы потолкуем и при тебе".
"Yes, you are quite right, my little father," rejoined she; "it is of no use your trying to play the sly fox. Send for the officers."	- То-то, батько мой, - отвечала она; - не тебе бы хитрить; посылай-ка за офицерами.
We again met.	Мы собрались опять.
Iv?n Kouzmitch read to us, before his wife, Pugatch?fs proclamation, drawn up by some illiterate Cossack.	Иван Кузмич в присутствии жены прочел нам воззвание Пугачева, писанное каким-нибудь полуграмотным казаком.
The robber proclaimed his intention of marching directly upon our fort, inviting the Cossacks and the soldiers to join him, and counselling the chiefs not to withstand him, threatening them, should they do so, with the utmost torture.	Разбойник объявлял о своем намерении немедленно идти на нашу крепость; приглашал казаков и солдат в свою шайку, а командиров увещевал не супротивляться, угрожая казнию в противном случае.
The proclamation was written in coarse but emphatic terms, and was likely to produce a great impression on the minds of simple people.	Воззвание написано было в грубых, но сильных выражениях, и должно было произвести опасное впечатление на умы простых людей.
"What a rascal," cried the Commandant's wife.	"Каков мошенник!" - воскликнула комендантша. -
"Just look what he dares to propose to us!	"Что смеет еще нам предлагать!
