Маленький принц

"Has it any mountains?"	- А горы есть?
"I couldn't tell you," said the geographer.	- Не знаю, - повторил географ.
"And towns, and rivers, and deserts?"	- А города, реки, пустыни?
"I couldn't tell you that, either."	- И этого я тоже не знаю.
"But you are a geographer!"	- Но ведь вы географ!
"Exactly," the geographer said.	- Вот именно, - сказал старик.
"But I am not an explorer.	- Я географ, а не путешественник.
I haven't a single explorer on my planet.	Мне ужасно не хватает путешественников.
It is not the geographer who goes out to count the towns, the rivers, the mountains, the seas, the oceans, and the deserts.	Ведь не географы ведут счет городам, рекам, горам, морям, океанам и пустыням.
The geographer is much too important to go loafing about.	Географ - слишком важное лицо, ему некогда разгуливать.
He does not leave his desk.	Он не выходит из своего кабинета.
But he receives the explorers in his study.	Но он принимает у себя путешественников и записывает их рассказы.
He asks them questions, and he notes down what they recall of their travels. And if the recollections of any one among them seem interesting to him, the geographer orders an inquiry into that explorer's moral character."	И если кто-нибудь из них расскажет что-нибудь интересное, географ наводит справки и проверяет, порядочный ли человек этот путешественник.
"Why is that?"	- А зачем?
"Because an explorer who told lies would bring disaster on the books of the geographer.	- Да ведь если путешественник станет врать, в учебниках географии все перепутается.
So would an explorer who drank too much."	И если он выпивает лишнее - тоже беда.
"Why is that?" asked the little prince.	- А почему?
"Because intoxicated men see double.	- Потому что у пьяниц двоится в глазах.
Then the geographer would note down two mountains in a place where there was only one."	И там, где на самом деле одна гора, географ отметит две.
"I know some one," said the little prince, "who would make a bad explorer."	- Я знал одного человека... Из него вышел бы плохой путешественник, - сказал Маленький принц.
"That is possible.	- Очень возможно.
Then, when the moral character of the explorer is shown to be good, an inquiry is ordered into his discovery."	Так вот, если окажется, что путешественник -человек порядочный, тогда проверяют его открытие. - Как проверяют?
"One goes to see it?"	Идут и смотрят?
"No.	- Ну нет.
That would be too complicated.	Это слишком сложно.
But one requires the explorer to furnish proofs.	Просто требуют, чтобы путешественник представил доказательства.
