One of the men ran into the ship and brought forth food tins which were opened and dished out without much noise.	Один из космонавтов сбегал в ракету и принес консервы, которые открыли и раздали без особого шума.

The captain sat down and recounted the trip to them.	Капитан сел и сделал краткий обзор полета.

They would not talk about the return trip.	Про обратный путь говорить не хотелось.
Someone brought that up, but they told him to keep quiet.	Кто-то было заикнулся об этом, но его заставили замолчать.
The spoons moved in the double moonlight; the food tasted good and the wine was even better.	В двойном лунном свете быстро мелькали ложки; еда казалась очень вкусной, вино - еще вкуснее.
There was a touch of fire across the sky, and an instant later the auxiliary rocket landed beyond the camp.	В небе чиркнуло пламя, и мгновение спустя за их стоянкой села вспомогательная ракета.
Spender watched as the small port opened and Hathaway, the physician-geologist - they were all men of twofold ability, to conserve space on the trip -stepped out. He walked slowly over to the captain.	Хетэуэй, не торопясь, подошел к капитану.
"Well?" said Captain Wilder.	- Ну, что там? - спросил капитан Уайлдер.
Hathaway gazed out at the distant cities twinkling in the starlight.	Хетэуэй глядел на далекие города, мерцающие в звездном свете.
After swallowing and focusing his eyes he said,	Потом проглотил ком в горле и перевел взгляд на Уайлдера:
"That city there, Captain, is dead and has been dead a good many thousand years.	- Вон тот город мертв, капитан, мертв уж много тысяч лет.
That applies to those three cities in the hills also.	Как и три города в горах.
But that fifth city, two hundred miles over, sir - "	Но пятый город, в двухстах милях отсюда...
"What about it?"	- Ну?
"People were living in it last week, sir."	- Еще на прошлой неделе там жили.
Spender got to his feet.	Спендер встал.
"Martians," said Hathaway.	- Марсиане, - добавил Хетэуэй.
"Where are they now?"	- А где они теперь?
"Dead," said Hathaway.	- Умерли, - сказал Хетэуэй.
"I went into a house on one street. I thought that it, like the other towns and houses, had been dead for centuries.	- Я зашел в один дом, думал, что он, как и другие дома в остальных городах, заброшен много веков назад.
My God, there were bodies there.	Силы небесные, сколько там трупов!
It was like walking in a pile of autumn leaves.	Словно груды осенних листьев!
