"Terribly alone."	- Страшно одинок.
"Are you?" John looked surprised.	- Неужели? - удивился Джон.
"I thought that in the Other Place ... I mean, Linda always said that nobody was ever alone there."	- Я думал, в Том мире... Линда же говорит, что там никто и никогда не одинок.
Bernard blushed uncomfortably.	Бернард смущенно покраснел.
"You see," he said, mumbling and with averted eyes, "I'm rather different from most people, I suppose.	- Видите ли, - пробормотал он, глядя в сторону, -я, должно быть, не совсем такой, как большинство.
If one happens to be decanted different ..."	Если раскупориваешься не таким...
"Yes, that's just it." The young man nodded.	- Да, в этом все дело, - кивнул Джон.
"If one's different, one's bound to be lonely.	- Если ты не такой, как другие, то обречен на одиночество.
They're beastly to one.	Относиться к тебе будут подло.
Do you know, they shut me out of absolutely everything?	Мне ведь нет ни к чему доступа.

He was silent for a little; then, in a low voice, "Once," he went on, "I did something that none of the others did: I stood against a rock in the middle of the day, in summer, with my arms out, like Jesus on the Cross."	- Он помолчал, потом продолжал негромко: - А однажды летом я сделал такое, чего другие никто не делали: простоял под жарким солнцем, спиной к скале, раскинув руки, как Иисус на кресте...

"I wanted to know what it was like being crucified.	- Хотел испытать, каково быть распятым.

"But why?"	- Да зачем вам это?
