Suddenly from under the bed a pug-faced twin popped up between John's chair and the wall, and began peering into Linda's sleeping face.	Неожиданно из-под кровати, между стулом Джона и стеной, вынырнул курносый карапуз и уставился на спящее лицо Линды.
"I say ..." he began; but the sentence ended prematurely in a squeal.	- Ну и... - начал он, но завизжал, не кончив.
The Savage had seized him by the collar, lifted him clear over the chair and, with a smart box on the ears, sent him howling away.	Ибо Дикарь поднял его за шиворот, пронес над стулом и отогнал подзатыльником.
His yells brought the Head Nurse hurrying to the rescue.	На визг прибежала старшая медсестра.
"What have you been doing to him?" she demanded fiercely.	- Как вы смеете трогать ребенка! - накинулась она на Дикаря.
"I won't have you striking the children."	- Я не позволю вам бить детей.
"Well then, keep them away from this bed."	- А вы зачем пускаете их к кровати?
The Savage's voice was trembling with indignation.	- Голос Дикаря дрожал от возмущения.
"What are these filthy little brats doing here at all?	- И вообще зачем тут эти чертенята?
It's disgraceful!"	Это просто безобразие!
"Disgraceful?	- Как безобразие?
But what do you mean?	Вы что?
They're being death-conditioned.	Им же здесь прививают смертонавыки.
And I tell you," she warned him truculently, "if I have any more of your interference with their conditioning, I'll send for the porters and have you thrown out."	Имейте в виду, - сказала она зло, - если вы и дальше будете мешать их смертовоспитанию, я пошлю за санитарами и вас выставят отсюда.
The Savage rose to his feet and took a couple of steps towards her.	Дикарь встал и шагнул к старшей сестре.
His movements and the expression on his face were so menacing that the nurse fell back in terror.	Надвигался он и глядел так грозно, что та отшатнулась в испуге.
With a great effort he checked himself and, without speaking, turned away and sat down again by the bed.	С превеликим усилием он сдержал себя, молча повернулся, сел опять у постели.
Reassured, but with a dignity that was a trifle shrill and uncertain, "I've warned you," said the nurse,	Несколько ободрясь, но еще нервозно, неуверенно сестра сказала: - Я вас предупредила.
"I've warned you," said the nurse, "so mind."	Так что имейте в виду.
Still, she led the too inquisitive twins away and made them join in the game of hunt-the-zipper, which had been organized by one of her colleagues at the other end of the room.	Но все же она увела чересчур любознательных близнецов в дальний конец палаты, там другая медсестра организовала уже круговую сидячую игру в "поймай молнию".
"Run along now and have your cup of caffeine solution, dear," she said to the other nurse.	- Беги, милая, подкрепись чашечкой кофеинораствора, - велела ей старшая сестра.
The exercise of authority restored her confidence, made her feel better.	Велела - и от этого вернулись к старшей уверенность и бодрый настрой.
"Now children!" she called.	- Ну-ка, детки! - повела она игру.
