The nurse stood irresolute, looking now at the kneeling figure by the bed (the scandalous exhibition!) and now (poor children!) at the twins who had stopped their hunting of the zipper and were staring from the other end of the ward, staring with all their eyes and nostrils at the shocking scene that was being enacted round Bed 20.	В нерешимости сестра стояла, глядя то на коленопреклоненного (постыднейшая невоспитанность!), то на близнецов (бедняжки дети!), которые, прекратив игру, пялились с того конца палаты, таращились и глазами, и ноздрями на скандальное зрелище.
Should she speak to him? try to bring him back to a sense of decency? remind him of where he was? of what fatal mischief he might do to these poor innocents?	Заговорить с ним? Попытаться его урезонить?
Undoing all their wholesome death-conditioning with this disgusting outcry-as though death were something terrible, as though any one mattered as much as all that!	Чтобы он вспомнил, где находится, осознал, какой роковой вред наносит бедным малюткам, как расстраивает все их здоровые смертонавыки этим своим отвратительным взрывом эмоций... Как будто смерть - что-то ужасное, как будто из-за какой-то одной человеческой особи нужно рыдать!
It might give them the most disastrous ideas about the subject, might upset them into reacting in the entirely wrong, the utterly anti-social way.	У детей могут возникнуть самые пагубные представления о смерти, могут укорениться совершенно неверные, крайне антиобщественные рефлексы и реакции.
She stepped forward, she touched him on the shoulder.	Подойдя вплотную к Дикарю, она тронула его за плечо.
"Can't you behave?" she said in a low, angry voice.	- Нельзя ли вести себя прилично! - негромко, сердито сказала она.
But, looking around, she saw that half a dozen twins were already on their feet and advancing down the ward. The circle was disintegrating.	Но тут, оглянувшись, увидела, что игровой круг распадается, что полдесятка близнецов уже поднялось на ноги и направляется к Дикарю.
In another moment ... No, the risk was too great; the whole Group might be put back six or seven months in its conditioning.	Еще минута, и... Нет, этим рисковать нельзя; смертовоспитание всей группы может быть отброшено назад на шесть-семь месяцев.
She hurried back towards her menaced charges.	Она поспешила к своим питомцам, оказавшимся под такой угрозой.
"Now, who wants a chocolate eclair?" she asked in a loud, cheerful tone.	- А кому дать шоколадное пирожное? - спросила она громко и задорно.
"Me!" yelled the entire Bokanovsky Group in chorus.	- Мне! - хором заорала вся группа Бокановского.
Bed 20 was completely forgotten.	И тут же кровать № 20 была позабыта.
"Oh, God, God, God ..." the Savage kept repeating to himself.	"О Боже, Боже, Боже..." - твердил мысленно Дикарь.
In the chaos of grief and remorse that filled his mind it was the one articulate word.	В сумятице горя и раскаяния, наполнявшей его мозг, одно лишь четкое осталось это слово.
"God!" he whispered it aloud.	- Боже! - прошептал он.
"God ..."	- Боже...
"Whatever is he saying?" said a voice, very near, distinct and shrill through the warblings of the Super-Wurlitzer.	- Что это он бормочет? - звонко раздался рядом голосок среди трелей супермузыки.
