The Savage stood looking on.	Дикарь все глядел.
"O brave new world, O brave new world ..." In his mind the singing words seemed to change their tone.	"О дивный мир! О дивный новый мир..." Поющие слова зазвучали уже по-иному.
They had mocked him through his misery and remorse, mocked him with how hideous a note of cynical derision!	Уже не насмешкой над ним, горюющим и кающимся, не злорадной и наглой издевкой.
Fiendishly laughing, they had insisted on the low squalor, the nauseous ugliness of the nightmare.	Не дьявольским смехом, усугубляющим гнусное убожество, тошное уродство кошмара.
Now, suddenly, they trumpeted a call to arms.	Теперь они вдруг зазвучали трубным призывом к обновлению, к борьбе.
"O brave new world!"	"О дивный новый мир!"
Miranda was proclaiming the possibility of loveliness, the possibility of transforming even the nightmare into something fine and noble.	Миранда возвещает, что мир красоты возможен, что даже этот кошмар можно преобразить в нечто прекрасное и высокое.

It was a challenge, a command.	Это призыв, приказ.
"No shoving there now!" shouted the Deputy Sub-Bursar in a fury.	- Кончайте толкотню! - гаркнул альфовик.
He slammed down he lid of his cash-box.	Захлопнул крышку ящика.
"I shall stop the distribution unless I have good behaviour."	- Я прекращу раздачу, если не восстановится порядок.
The Deltas muttered, jostled one another a little, and then were still.	Дельты поворчали, потолкались и успокоились.
The threat had been effective.	Угроза подействовала.
Deprivation of soma-appalling thought!	Остаться без сомы - какой ужас!
"That's better," said the young man, and reopened his cash-box.	- Вот так-то, - сказал альфовик и опять открыл ящик.
Linda had been a slave, Linda had died; others should live in freedom, and the world be made beautiful.	Линда жила и умерла рабыней; остальные должны жить свободными, мир нужно сделать прекрасным.
A reparation, a duty.	В этом его долг, его покаяние.
And suddenly it was luminously clear to the Savage what he must do; it was as though a shutter had been opened, a curtain drawn back.	И внезапно Дикаря озарило, что именно надо сделать, точно ставни распахнулись, занавес отдернулся.
"Now," said the Deputy Sub-Bursar. Another khaki female stepped forward.	- Следующий, - сказал раздатчик.
"Stop!" called the Savage in a loud and ringing voice. "Stop!"	- Остановитесь! - воскликнул Дикарь громогласно - Остановитесь!
He pushed his way to the table; the Deltas stared at him with astonishment.	Он протиснулся к столу; дельты глядели на него удивленно.
