The whisper almost expired.	И совсем уж замирая:
"The feet of the Greater Being are on the stairs."	- Шаги Высшего Организма слышны на ступенях.
And once more there was silence; and the expectancy, momentarily relaxed, was stretched again, tauter, tauter, almost to the tearing point.	И вновь настала тишина; и напряжение ожидания, на миг ослабевшее, опять возросло, натянулось почти до предела.
The feet of the Greater Being-oh, they heard them, they heard them, coming softly down the stairs, coming nearer and nearer down the invisible stairs.	Шаги Высшего Организма - о, их слышно, их слышно теперь, они тихо звучат на ступенях, близясь, близясь, сходя по невидимым этим ступеням.

Feeling that it was time for him to do something, Bernard also jumped up and shouted:	Чувствуя, что пора и ему проявить себя, Бернард тоже вскочил и воскликнул:
"I hear him; He's coming."	- Я слышу, он близится!
But it wasn't true.	Но неправда.
He heard nothing and, for him, nobody was coming.	Ничего он не слышал, и к нему никто не близился.
Nobody-in spite of the music, in spite of the mounting excitement.	Никто - невзирая на музыку, несмотря на растущее вокруг возбуждение.
