"Infants where feeling and desire are concerned."	А в сфере чувства и желания - младенцы.
"Our Ford loved infants."	- Господь наш Форд любил младенцев.
Ignoring the interruption.	Словно не слыша, Бернард продолжал:
"It suddenly struck me the other day," continued Bernard, "that it might be possible to be an adult all the time."	- Меня осенило на днях, что возможно ведь быть взрослым во всех сферах жизни.
"I don't understand." Lenina's tone was firm.	- Не понимаю, - твердо возразила Ленайна.
"I know you don't.	- Знаю, что не понимаешь.
And that's why we went to bed together yesterday-like infants-instead of being adults and waiting."	Потому-то мы и легли сразу в постель, как младенцы, а не повременили с этим, как взрослые.
"But it was fun," Lenina insisted.	- Но было же славно, - не уступала Ленайна.
"Wasn't it?"	- Ведь славно?
"Oh, the greatest fun," he answered, but in a voice so mournful, with an expression so profoundly miserable, that Lenina felt all her triumph suddenly evaporate.	- Еще бы не славно, - ответил он, но таким скорбным тоном, с такой унылостью в лице, что весь остаток торжества Ленайны улетучился.
Perhaps he had found her too plump, after all.	"Видно, все-таки показалась я ему слишком полненькой".
"I told you so," was all that Fanny said, when Lenina came and made her confidences.	- Предупреждала я тебя, - только и сказала Фанни, когда Ленайна поделилась с ней своими печалями.
"It's the alcohol they put in his surrogate."	- Это все спирт, который влили ему в кровезаменитель.
"All the same," Lenina insisted. "I do like him.	- А все равно он мне нравится, - не сдалась Ленайна.
He has such awfully nice hands.	- У него ужасно ласковые руки.
And the way he moves his shoulders-that's very attractive."	И плечиками вздергивает до того мило.
She sighed.	- Она вздохнула.
"But I wish he weren't so odd."	- Жалко лишь, что он такой чудной.
§2 HALTING for a moment outside the door of the Director's room, Bernard drew a deep breath and squared his shoulders, bracing himself to meet the dislike and disapproval which he was certain of finding within.	Перед дверью директорского кабинета Бернард перевел дух, расправил плечи, зная, что за дверью его ждет неодобрение и неприязнь, и готовя себя к этому.
He knocked and entered.	Постучал и вошел.
"A permit for you to initial, Director," he said as airily as possible, and laid the paper on the writing-table.	- Нужна ваша подпись на пропуске, - сказал он как можно беззаботнее и положил листок Директору на стол.
The Director glanced at him sourly.	Директор покосился на Бернарда кисло.
