Gemma raised her eyes from her knitting and looked at him.	Джемма отвела глаза от работы и посмотрела на него.
He flushed suddenly scarlet and broke off. There was a little pause.	Он вспыхнул и не кончил фразы.
"Surely it is not come on again?" asked Galli anxiously.	- Неужели опять начинается приступ? - спросил тревожно Галли.
"Oh, nothing to speak of, thanks to your s-s-soothing application that I b-b-blasphemed against. Are you going already, Martini?"	- Нет, ничего, не обращайте внимания. Ваши с-снадобья помогли, хоть я и п-проклинал их... Вы уже уходите, Мартини?
"Yes. Come along, Galli; we shall be late."	- Да... Идемте, Галли, а то опоздаем.
Gemma followed the two men out of the room, and presently returned with an egg beaten up in milk.	Джемма вышла за ними и скоро вернулась со стаканом гоголь-моголя.
"Take this, please," she said with mild authority; and sat down again to her knitting.	- Выпейте, - сказала она мягко, но настойчиво и снова села за свое вязанье.
The Gadfly obeyed meekly.	Овод кротко повиновался.
For half an hour, neither spoke.	С полчаса оба молчали.
Then the Gadfly said in a very low voice:	Наконец он тихо проговорил:
"Signora Bolla!"	- Синьора Болла!
She looked up.	Джемма взглянула на него.
He was tearing the fringe of the couch-rug, and kept his eyes lowered.	Он теребил пальцами бахрому пледа, которым была покрыта кушетка, и не поднимал глаз.
"You didn't believe I was speaking the truth just now," he began.	- Скажите, вы не поверили моим рассказам?
"I had not the smallest doubt that you were telling falsehoods," she answered quietly.	- Я ни одной минуты не сомневалась, что вы все это выдумали, - спокойно ответила Джемма.
"You were quite right.	- Вы совершенно правы.
I was telling falsehoods all the time."	Я все время лгал.
"Do you mean about the war?"	- И о том, что касалось войны?
"About everything.	- Обо всем вообще.
I was not in that war at all; and as for the expedition, I had a few adventures, of course, and most of those stories are true, but it was not that way I got smashed.	Я никогда не участвовал в войнах. А экспедиция... Приключения там бывали, и большая часть того, о чем я рассказывал, -действительные факты. Но раны мои совершенно другого происхождения.
You have detected me in one lie, so I may as well confess the lot, I suppose."	Вы поймали меня на одной лжи, и теперь я могу сознаться во всем остальном.
"Does it not seem to you rather a waste of energy to invent so many falsehoods?" she asked.	- Стоит ли тратить силы на сочинение таких небылиц? - спросила Джемма. - По-моему, нет.
"I should have thought it was hardly worth the trouble."	- А что мне было делать?
"What would you have? You know your own English proverb:	Вы помните вашу английскую пословицу:
