He turned away from the door-step without speaking, and went hastily down the lane to the house where Zita had been lodging.	Овод повернулся, не добавив больше ни слова, и быстро пошел к дому, где жила Зита.
In her rooms nothing had been touched; all the presents that he had given her were in their usual places; there was no letter or scrap of writing anywhere.	В ее комнатах все было как прежде. Его подарки лежали по местам. Она не оставила ни письма, ни даже коротенькой записки.
"If you please, sir," said Bianca, putting her head in at the door, "there's an old woman—"	- Сударь, - сказала Бианка, просунув голову в дверь, - там пришла старуха...
He turned round fiercely.	Он круто повернулся к ней:

The old woman was waiting at his hall door. She was very poorly dressed, with a face as brown and wrinkled as a medlar, and a bright-coloured scarf twisted round her head.	Когда Овод вышел в переднюю, ему навстречу поднялась старуха - смуглая, вся сморщенная, очень бедно одетая, но в пестрой шали на голове.
As he came in she rose and looked at him with keen black eyes.	Она окинула его внимательным взглядом и сказала:
"You are the lame gentleman," she said, inspecting him critically from head to foot.	- Так вы и есть тот самый хромой господин?
"I have brought you a message from Zita Reni."	Зита Рени просила передать вам весточку.
He opened the study door, and held it for her to pass in; then followed her and shut the door, that Bianca might not hear.	Овод пропустил ее в кабинет, вошел следом за ней и затворил дверь, чтобы Бианка не подслушала их.
