The hand upon his shoulder weighed like a hand of lead. It was intolerable. It seemed to crush him.	Рука Дориана на его плече была тяжелее свинца, -- казалось, сейчас она раздавит его. Это было невыносимо.

He hesitated a moment.	Кэмпбел с минуту еще колебался.
"Is there a fire in the room upstairs?"	Потом спросил: -- В той комнате, наверху, есть камин?
"Yes, there is a gas-fire with asbestos."	-- Да, газовый, с асбестом.
"I shall have to go home and get some things from the laboratory."	-- Мне придется съездить домой, взять коечто в лаборатории.
"No, Alan, you must not leave the house.	-- Нет, Алан, я вас отсюда не выпущу.
Write out on a sheet of note-paper what you want, and my servant will take a cab and bring the things back to you."	Напишите, что вам нужно, а мой лакей съездит к вам и привезет.
Campbell scrawled a few lines, blotted them, and addressed an envelope to his assistant.	Кэмпбел нацарапал несколько строк, промакнул, а на конверте написал фамилию своего помощника.

As the chime struck one, Campbell turned round, and, looking at Dorian Gray, saw that his eyes were filled with tears.	Куранты пробили час. Кэмпбел обернулся и, взглянув на Дориана, увидел, что глаза его полны слез.
There was something in the purity and refinement of that sad face that seemed to enrage him.	В чистоте и тонкости этого печального лица было чтото, взбесившее Алана.
"You are infamous, absolutely infamous!" he muttered.	-- Вы подлец, гнусный подлец! -- сказал он тихо.
"Hush, Alan: you have saved my life," said Dorian.	-- Не надо, Алан! Вы спасли мне жизнь.
