Ms Florensky may have her shortcomings. She might be slightly homophobic, even though she herself used to have, erm, unconventional inclinations in her younger years, a fact which she freely admitted before her audience. Homosexuals or ex-homosexuals, struggling with their stigmas, should be admired for their attempts to do so and excused for their inability to easily overcome their traumas, I therefore suggest that we withdraw from any judgment of Ms Florensky on this point. («Как это умно! — отметила я про себя. — Надо будет взять на вооружение».) She also might be a hidden admirer of Russian militarism. She may be sometimes carried away in her wish to defend Orthodox values and beliefs. And so on, and so forth. All these features of Ms Florensky’s unique personality originate from one simple fact that the members of this meeting seem to have overlooked. The fact is that she is Russian.

She is Russian, — с торжеством продолжал мой защитник, — and her homophobia, or her admiration for white, cisgender males, or her concealed approval of Russian militarism, or whatnot, are clearly a part of her genetic code. (Здесь, само собой, он совершил хитрый риторический манёвр, пользуясь тем, что genetic code может пониматься и буквально, и метафорически, как синоним «культурной ДНК». Все ли сумели уследить за этой хитростью?) Do you seriously expect her to change her genetic code? Is Ms Florensky required to change the colour of her eyes, or her height as well?

Two important issues must be mentioned in this connection, ladies and gentlemen. Ms Florensky was giving to our students a series of brilliant lectures on Russian music. Who else, I am asking you, who else except a native Russian could have managed this job? Do you perhaps want me to teach our students the importance of Vladimir Tsoi and Alexander Rosenblatt? (Я не смогла понять, нечаянно ли сэр Гилберт ошибся с именами и фамилиями наших музыкантов или сделал это специально, чтобы ещё раз продемонстрировать полёт иронической мысли.) Or do you want our students to be uneducated halfwits, having no knowledge of foreign musical cultures whatsoever?

The second important issue is the issue of Russophobia which, like all other disgusting nationalistic phobias, shall never be tolerated within the walls of our college. Ms Florensky is—come to think of it—a member of an ethnic minority and should be treated accordingly. Do you have an objection, Ms Berzina?

— Yes, I do. — Агнесе приподнялась с места на несколько секунд и, избегая смотреть сэру Гилберту в глаза, быстро проговорила:

— I only wanted to remark that Russians belong to the white majority, not to an ethnic minority.

— I was expecting this! — воскликнул он с юношеской энергией, и я подумала, что вполне могу представить, каким он был сорок лет назад. — Fully wrong! Russians do not belong to the white majority! They are Scythians, as is generally known! On this occasion, allow me the pleasure to quote from a famous poem by the Russian poet Alexander Blok, translated by Kurt Dowson.

Millions are you—and hosts, ye hosts, are we,

And we shall fight if war you want, take heed!

Yes, we are Scythians—leaf of the Asian tree,

Our slanted eyes are bright aglow with greed!

Попечитель прочитал эти строчки как подлинный артист, получая явное удовольствие от своей декламации. Она произвела сильное впечатление — не знаю, правда, было ли это впечатление обязано самому смыслу поэмы или тому, что баронет, аристократ, столп общества так явно, неприкрыто, упоительно произносил нечто скандальное, возмутительно национально-шовинистское. Подождав немного и насладившись произведённым впечатлением, сэр Гилберт скучно и прагматично закончил:

— The claim to remove Ms Florensky from the staff looks in this context as a case of racial prejudice that we cannot permit ourselves. The Board has, of course, full right to decide otherwise. I have finished, Your Honour.
