Rosa put the newspaper down on the bed and reached for a cigarette.	Роза отложила газету на кровать и взяла сигарету.
She looked at the clock. It was after eight. That made it after eleven o'clock in New York.	Она взглянула на часы, было начало девятого, значит в Нью-Йорке начало двенадцатого.
David should have called by now.	Сейчас должен позвонить Дэвид.
Usually, if he expected to be out late, he would let her know.	Если он задерживается, то обычно предупреждает.
Could something have happened to him?	А вдруг с ним что-то случилось?
Could he be lying hurt in the streets of New York, three thousand miles away, and she'd never know until it was too late?	Вдруг он лежит раненый на нью-йоркской улице за три тысячи миль отсюда, а она узнает об этом, когда будет слишком поздно?
She picked up the telephone and called him at his hotel in New York.	Она набрала номер отеля.
She heard the rapid relay of the telephone across the country, then the phone ringing in his suite. It rang for a long time.	Трубку долго не снимали, потом раздался тихий голос Дэвида:
"Hello," he said.	- Привет.
His voice was low and cautious. "David, are you all right?"	- С тобой все в порядке, Дэвид?
"I'm fine," he said.	- Да.

Are you in the bedroom?"	Ты в спальне?
"Yes," he answered, in the same low, cautious voice. "I'm in the bedroom."	- Да, - тихо ответил он, - я в спальне.
"Are you sitting on the bed?"	- Ты сидишь на кровати?
"Yes."	- Да.
"I'm lying on the bed." She waited for him to ask the usual question. This time he didn't, so she told him, anyway. "I have nothing on," she whispered.	- А я лежу на кровати. - Она ждала, что он задаст обычный вопрос, но, не дождавшись, сказала сама. - У меня все по-прежнему.
A sudden warmth rose up in her. "Oh, David, I miss you so.	Ох, Дэвид, я так скучаю без тебя.
I wish you were here beside me."	Я хочу, чтобы ты сейчас был возле меня.
She heard the faint sound of a striking match.	Она услышала в трубке звук чиркнувшей спички.
"I'll be out there by the end of the week."	- Я уеду отсюда в конце недели.
"I can't wait, David. Can you?"	- Я не могу ждать, Дэвид, а ты?
"No," he said, still cautiously.	- Тоже.
"Stretch out on the bed for a moment, David," she whispered. "I want you to feel me as I feel you."	- Приляг на минутку на кровать, Дэвид, -прошептала Роза, - я хочу, чтобы ты чувствовал меня так же, как я тебя.
