"What did you go an' do that for?" Andy asked, when they came out onto the street. "Now we won't never know if it worked."	- Зачем ты это сделал? - спросил Энди, когда они вышли на улицу. - Теперь мы не узнаем, как порошок действует.
"We'll know," Johnny said, turning to look through the window.	- Узнаем, - ответил Джонни, заглядывая в окно аптеки.
Jennie had finished her drink and was climbing down from the stool.	Дженни допила кока-колу и слезла со стула.
She put the magazine back on the rack and started for the door.	Вернув журнал обратно на стенд, она вышла на улицу.
Johnny moved over to intercept her.	К ней подошел Джонни.
"Going home, Jennie?"	- Ты домой, Дженни?
She stopped and smiled at him. "I thought I'd go down to the park. Maybe there's a cool breeze coming in from the bay."	- Хотела зайти в парк, - сказала с улыбкой Дженни, - может, там попрохладнее от ветра с залива.
"Mind if we come along?" Johnny asked.	- Не возражаешь, если мы проводим тебя?
"We're not doin' anything."	Делать нам все равно нечего.
She wondered what made Johnny ask to walk with her all of a sudden.	Она подумала, почему это Джонни вдруг предложил проводить ее.
He'd never seemed interested in her before.	Ведь раньше он никогда не обращал на нее внимания. * * *
It was almost ten o'clock when Tom Denton came out of the saloon across from the car barn.	Было уже почти десять вечера, когда Том Дентон вышел из салуна, расположенного напротив депо.
He was drunk. Sad, weeping, unhappy drunk.	Он был здорово пьян.
He stared across the street at the car barn.	Перейдя улицу, он подошел к воротам депо.
Old Two-twelve was in there.	Его старушка номер двести двенадцать стояла там.
His old car.	Его старая машина.
But she wasn't his car any more. She'd never be his car any more.	Но теперь это была уже не его машина, и никогда снова его не будет.
She was somebody else's car now.	Сейчас на ней ездит другой.
The tears began to roll down his cheeks. He was a failure. No car, no job, not even a wife to come home to. Right now she was probably sitting in a corner of the church, praying. Didn't she understand a man had to have more than a prayer when he got into bed?	Неужели она не понимает, что когда мужчина ложится в кровать, он хочет получить что-нибудь еще кроме молитвы?
If he had a couple of dollars in his pocket, he knew where he'd go.	Если бы у него в кармане была куча денег, он знал бы куда пойти.
