"Ready to remount the engine, Mr. Winthrop," a man called from the doorway.	- Все готово для установки двигателя, мистер Уинтроп, - раздался в дверях голос кого-то из персонала.
"I'll be there in a minute." Amos turned back to me. "You remind me of this after we get back from the test flight."	- Буду через минуту, - ответил Эймос и снова повернулся ко мне. - Напомни мне завтра об этом после полета.
I grinned, watching him walk out the door.	Я усмехнулся ему вслед.
At least, he hadn't gone so holy-holy that I couldn't get his goat.	Не такой уж он святой, чтобы его не в чем было упрекнуть.
I sat up and started looking under the couch for my shoes.	Я сел и принялся отыскивать под диваном ботинки.
When I got outside, the engine was turning over, sweet and smooth.	Когда я вышел из кабинета, двигатель уже был запущен, работал он четко и мягко.
"She seems O.K. to me now," Amos said, turning to me.	- Похоже, что теперь все в порядке, - сказал Эймос, оборачиваясь ко мне.
I looked at my watch. It was four thirty.	Я посмотрел на часы - половина пятого.
"Then, let's go.	- Тогда начинаем.
What're we waiting for?"	Чего еще ждать?
He put a hand on my arm.	Эймос взял меня за руку.
"Sure I can't make you change your mind?"	- Мне действительно не удастся переубедить тебя?
I shook my head.	Я покачал головой.
Seventeen million dollars was a lot of argument.	Семнадцать миллионов были серьезным аргументом.
He raised his hands to his mouth, making a megaphone of them.	Он поднес рупором руки ко рту и крикнул:
"Everybody off the ship except the flight crew."	- Всем, за исключением летной команды, покинуть самолет.
Almost immediately, there was a silence in the yard as the engine shut off.	Двигатель замолк, и воцарилась тишина.
A few minutes later, the last of them came down the boarding flap.	Через несколько минут последний рабочий покинул самолет через откидной борт.
A man stuck his head out of the small window in the pilot's cabin.	Из маленького окна кабины выглянул человек.
"Everybody off except the crew, Mr. Winthrop."	- Приказание выполнено, мистер Уинтроп, -сказал он.
Amos and I walked up the flap into the plane, then up the small ladder from the cargo deck to the passenger cabin and on forward into the flight cabin.	Мы с Эймосом через откидной борт попали в грузовой отсек, по маленькому трапу поднялись в пассажирский салон и прошли в кабину.
Three young men were there. They looked at me curiously. They were still wearing the hard hats from the shipyard.	Там сидели трое молодых людей.
