The Mother Superior returned with a small, neat parcel.	Вернулась настоятельница с аккуратным пакетиком в руках.
"They're handkerchiefs that I've had made for the name-day of my mother," she said.	- Это носовые платки, - сказала она, - подарок моей матери к именинам.
"The initials have been embroidered by our young girls."	Монограммы вышивали наши девочки.
Sister St Joseph suggested that Kitty would like to see how beautifully the work was done and the Mother Superior with an indulgent, deprecating smile untied the parcel.	Сестра Сен-Жозеф высказала мнение, что Китти интересно будет посмотреть, какая это искусная работа, и настоятельница, снисходительно улыбаясь, развернула пакет.
The handkerchiefs were of very fine lawn and the initials embroidered in a complicated cypher were surmounted by a crown of strawberry leaves.	Платки были из тончайшего батиста, над замысловатой монограммой вышита корона из земляничных листьев.
When Kitty had properly admired the workmanship, the handkerchiefs were wrapped up again and the parcel handed to her.	Когда Китти, как от нее и ожидали, рассыпалась в похвалах, платки были снова завернуты и вручены ей.
Sister St Joseph, with an "Eh bien, Madame, je vous quitte" and a repetition of her polite and impersonal salutations, went away.	Сестра Сен-Жозеф, еще раз повторив свои вежливо-безличные напутствия, удалилась со словами:
Kitty realized that this was the moment to take her leave of the Superior.	"Eh bien, Madame, je vous quitte", и Китти поняла, что пришло время проститься с настоятельницей.

She glanced at the address.	Она взглянула на адрес.
The name seemed very grand, but the place mentioned attracted her attention.	Фамилия выглядела очень внушительно, но ее больше заинтересовало название места.
"But that is one of the chateaux I've seen.	- Да ведь это один из тех замков, которые мы осматривали!
I was motoring with friends in France."	Я как-то совершила с друзьями автомобильную поездку по Франции.
"It is very possible," said the Mother Superior.	- Вполне возможно.
"Strangers are permitted to view it on two days a week."	Он открыт для обозрения два раза в неделю.
"I think if I had ever lived in such a beautiful place I should never have had the courage to leave it."	- Если б я жила в таком изумительном месте, у меня ни за что не хватило бы духу оттуда уехать.
"It is of course a historical monument.	- Это, конечно, известный памятник архитектуры.
It is scarcely intimate.	Но жить в нем неуютно.
