"But he makes a condition."	- Но он ставит условие.
He gave her an inquiring glance and he seemed to reflect.	Он посмотрел на нее вопросительно, как бы что-то соображая.
"Of course I'm not a very rich man, but I'll do anything in my power."	- Я, конечно, не богач, но все, что могу, сделаю.
Kitty was silent.	Китти промолчала.
Charlie was saying things which she would never have expected him to say.	Чарли сегодня говорит совсем непохоже на себя.
And they made it difficult for her to speak.	И от этого ей особенно трудно.
She had expected to blurt it put in one breath, held in his loving arms, with her burning face hid on his breast.	Она-то думала, что выложит ему все сразу, спрятав пылающее лицо у него на груди!
"He agrees to my divorcing him if your wife will give him the assurance that she will divorce you."	- Он согласен, чтобы я развелась с ним, если твоя жена разведется с тобой.
"Anything else?"	- Это все?
Kitty could hardly find her voice.	Китти выговорила, запинаясь:
"And - it's awfully hard to say, Charlie, it sounds dreadful - if you'll promise to marry me within a week of the decrees being made absolute."	- Ужасно трудно это сказать, Чарли, это звучит так страшно... и если ты пообещаешь жениться на мне не позже чем через неделю после того, как судебные решения войдут в силу.

FOR a moment he was silent.	Он ответил не сразу.
Then he took her hand again and pressed it gently.	Снова ласково сжал ее руку.
"You know, darling," he said, "whatever happens we must keep Dorothy out of this."	- Вот что, девочка. Как бы ни обернулось дело, Дороти мы не должны в это впутывать.
She looked at him blankly.	Она изумилась:
"But I don't understand.	- Но я не понимаю.
How can we?"	Как же так?
"Well, we can't only think of ourselves in this world.	- Ну, знаешь ли, в этой жизни нельзя думать только о себе.
You know, other things being equal, there's nothing in this world I'd love more than to marry you.	При прочих равных условиях я бы завтра же на тебе женился.
But it's quite out of the question.	Но это исключено.
I know Dorothy: nothing would induce her to divorce me."	Я знаю Дороти: ничто не заставит ее развестись со мной.
Kitty was becoming horribly frightened.	Китти почувствовала, что ее охватывает ужас.
She began to cry again.	Она опять заплакала.
He got up and sat down beside her with his arm round her waist.	Он встал, подсел к ней, обнял.
"Try not to upset yourself, darling.	- Мужайся, девочка.
