“I didn’t (я не встал /с неправильной стороны/),” said Michael. “There is no wrong side to my bed (нет неправильной стороны у моей кровати).”

“Every bed has a right and a wrong side (каждая кровать имеет правильную и неправильную сторону),” said Mary Poppins, primly (сказала Мэри Поппинс чопорно).

“Not mine (не моя) — it’s next the wall (она рядом со стеной).”

“That makes no difference (это не имеет значения: «делает никакую разницу»). It’s still a side (это по-прежнему сторона = все равно это сторона),” scoffed Mary Poppins (насмешливо сказала Мэри Поппинс; toscoff — насмехаться, осмеивать, поднимать на смех).

“Well (ну), is the wrong side the left side (неправильная сторона — левая сторона) or is the wrong side the right side (или неправильная сторона — правая сторона)? “I hate being good,” he said aloud to himself, as he trailed after Mary Poppins and Jane and the perambulator on the afternoon walk to the Park.

“Don’t dawdle,” said Mary Poppins, looking back at him.

But he went on dawdling and dragging the sides of his shoes along the pavement in order to scratch the leather.

Suddenly Mary Poppins turned and faced him, one hand on the handle of the perambulator.

“You,” she began, “got out of bed the wrong side this morning.”

“I didn’t,” said Michael. “There is no wrong side to my bed.”

“Every bed has a right and a wrong side,” said Mary Poppins, primly.

“Not mine — it’s next the wall.”

“That makes no difference. It’s still a side,” scoffed Mary Poppins.

“Well, is the wrong side the left side or is the wrong side the right side? Because I got out on the right side, so how can it be wrong?”

“Both sides were the wrong side, this morning, Mr Smarty!”

“But it has only one (но она имеет только одну), and if I got out the right side (и если я встал с правой стороны) — ” he argued (он спорил).

“Now, sir (теперь, сэр),” said Mary Poppins. “Off you go (иди-ка/направляйся-ка) — in front of me, please (вперед меня, пожалуйста). I’m not going to have you stravaiging behind any longer (я не собираюсь иметь тебя плетущимся сзади сколько-нибудь дольше; to stravaige — бродитьбезцели, болтаться, брести /шотл, сев.-англ./). You’ll oblige me (ты сделаешь мне одолжение) by going on ahead (идя впереди).” She pushed him in front of her (она толкнула его вперед себя). “And,” she continued (она продолжила), “there’s a shiny thing sparkling on the path just along there (есть блестящая вещь, сияющая на тропинке как раз прямо там). I’ll thank you to go (я буду благодарна вам за /то, что ты/ пойдешь) and pick it up (и поднимешь ее) and bring it to me (и принесешь ее мне). Somebody’s dropped their tiara (кто-то уронил свою: «их» диадему), perhaps (возможно).”
