Four days after he’d acquired the suit, Harry’s big day arrived. He counted nine other candidates and was convinced that most had glanced at his suit enviously. It was a senior post, and a gruelling day was outlined for the nervous interviewees. But by lunch-time Harry was bored and irritable.

A portly man entered (полный мужчина вошел) and asked two candidates to stay (и попросил двоих кандидатов остаться) while wishing the others a needlessly jolly farewell (а остальным пожелал всего хорошего с неуместным оптимизмом; needless – ненужный, излишний; jolly – веселый, радостный; farewell – прощание; to wish smb. farewell – прощаться с кем-л.). Harry felt his heart lurch sickeningly (Гарри почувствовал, как его сердце неприятно екнуло; to feel). He approached the fat interview supervisor (он подошел к толстому председателю проводящих собеседование; to supervise smth. – смотреть, наблюдать за чем-л.; надзирать; заведовать).

‘There must be some mistake (должно быть, произошла ошибка),’ he declared unsteadily (заявил он дрожащим голосом; unsteady – неустойчивый; колышущийся, дрожащий), ‘I’m sure you meant me to stay behind too (я уверен, что вы имели в виду, что я тоже должен остаться; to mean).’
