Suddenly, with the plates held in his hands, he stopped.	Вдруг остановился на полпути со стопкой тарелок в руках.
He said in an odd scared voice: "There's somebody running..."	- Сюда кто-то бежит, - испуганно сказал он не своим голосом.
They could all hear it - running feet along the terrace.	Они услышали топот.
In that minute, they knew - knew without being told... As by common accord, they all rose to their feet. They stood looking towards the door.	И тут же, хотя им никто ничего не говорил, все поняли... Будто по чьему-то знаку, они встали, уставились на дверь.
Dr. Armstrong appeared, his breath coming fast.	В комнату ворвался запыхавшийся доктор Армстронг.
He said: "General Macarthur -"	-Генерал Макартур... - сказал он.
"Dead!" The voice burst from Vera explosively.	- Мертв! - вырвалось у Веры.
Armstrong said: "Yes, he's dead..."	- Да, он мертв, - сказал Армстронг.
There was a pause - a long pause.	Воцарилось молчание - долгое молчание.
Seven people looked at each other and could find no words to say.	Семь человек смотрели друг на друга, не в силах произнести ни слова.
IV The storm broke just as the old man's body was borne in through the door.	Тело генерала вносили в дверь, когда разразился шторм.
The others were standing in the hall.	Гости сгрудились в холле.
There was a sudden hiss and roar as the rain came down.	И тут раздался вой и свист ветра - на крышу дома обрушились потеки воды.
As Blore and Armstrong passed up the stairs with their burden, Vera Claythorne turned suddenly and went into the deserted dining-room.	Блор и Армстронг направлялись со своей ношей к лестнице, как вдруг Вера Клейторн резко повернулась и кинулась в опустевшую столовую.
It was as they had left it. The sweet course stood ready on the sideboard untasted,	Там все оставалось на своих местах - нетронутый десерт стоял на буфете.
Vera went up to the table.	Вера подошла к столу.
She was there a minute or two later when Rogers came softly into the room.	Постояла минуту-две, и тут в комнату неслышными шагами вошел Роджерс.
He started when he saw her.	Увидев ее, он вздрогнул.
Then his eyes asked a question.	Посмотрел на нее вопросительно и сказал:
He said: "Oh, Miss, I - I just came to see..."	-Я... я... пришел только посмотреть, мисс.
In a loud harsh voice that surprised herself Vera said: "You're quite right, Rogers. Look for yourself. There are only seven..."	-Вы не ошиблись, Роджерс. Глядите: их всего семь, - сказала Вера неожиданно охрипшим голосом.
V General Macarthur had been laid on his bed.	Тело Макартура положили на постель.
After making a last examination Armstrong left the room and came downstairs.	Осмотрев труп, Армстронг вышел из спальни генерала и спустился вниз.
He found the others assembled in the drawing-room.	Все сошлись в гостиной - ждали его.
Miss Brent was knitting.	Мисс Брент вязала.
