"In here, sir, come in here."	- Сюда, сэр, пройдите сюда.
He opened the dining-room door. The doctor passed in. Rogers followed him and shut the door behind him.	Он открыл дверь столовой, пропустил доктора вперед, вошел сам и притворил за собой дверь.
"Well," said Armstrong, "what is it?"	- Ну, - сказал Армстронг, - в чем дело?
The muscles of Rogers' throat were working.	Кадык у Роджерса ходил ходуном.
He was swallowing. He jerked out	Казалось, он что-то глотает и никак не может проглотить.
"There's things going on, sir, that I don't understand."	- Здесь творится что-то непонятное, сэр, - наконец решился он.
Armstrong said sharply: "Things? What things?"	- Что вы имеете в виду? - спросил Армстронг.
"You'll think I'm crazy, sir.	- Может, вы подумаете, сэр, что я сошел с ума.
You'll say it isn't anything.	Скажете, что все это чепуха.
But it's got to be explained, sir.	Только это никак не объяснишь.

Because it doesn't make any sense."	И что это значит?
"Well, man, tell me what it is?	- Да скажите же, наконец, в чем дело.
Don't go on talking in riddles."	Перестаньте говорить загадками.
Rogers swallowed again.	Роджерс снова проглотил слюну.
He said: "It's those little figures, sir.	- Это все фигурки, сэр.
In the middle of the table.	Те самые, посреди стола.
The little china figures.	Фарфоровые негритята.
Ten of them, there were.	Их было десять.
I'll swear to that, ten of them."	Готов побожиться, что их было десять.
Armstrong said: "Yes, ten. We counted them last night at dinner."	- Ну, да, десять, - сказал Армстронг, - мы пересчитали их вчера за обедом.
Rogers came nearer.	Роджерс подошел поближе.
"That's just it, sir.	- В этом вся загвоздка, сэр.
Last night, when I was clearing up, there wasn't but nine, sir.	Прошлой ночью, когда я убирал со стола, их было уже девять, сэр.
I noticed it and thought it queer.	Я удивился.
