IN THE MORNING WHEN he went outside he found that the milk and hamburger were gone.	Утром, выйдя из дома, он не обнаружил ни молока, ни гамбургера.
His eyes rushed over the lawn.	Он окинул взглядом лужайку.
There were two women crumpled on the grass but the dog wasn't there.	На траве валялись две женщины - но пса не было.
A breath of relief passed his lips.	Он с облегчением выдохнул.
Thank God for that, he thought.	Слава тебе, Господи, - подумал он.
Then he grinned to himself.	И усмехнулся.
If I were religious now, he thought, I'd find in this a vindication of my prayer.	Будь я верующим, - подумал он, - я бы решил, что моя молитва была услышана.
Immediately afterward he began berating himself for not being awake when the dog had come.	И тут же начал бранить себя, что проспал момент, когда приходил пес.
It must have been after dawn, when the streets were safe.	Наверное, это было на рассвете, когда улицы уже пусты.
