It happens to me a lot, I know, partly because my last name is Irish, and most people of Irish descent are Catholics.	Со мной это часто бывает, главным образом потому, что у меня фамилия ирландская, а коренные ирландцы почти все католики.
As a matter of fact, my father was a Catholic once.	Кстати, мой отец раньше тоже был католиком.
He quit, though, when he married my mother.	А потом, когда женился на моей маме, бросил это дело.
But Catholics are always trying to find out if you're a Catholic even if they don't know your last name.	Но католики вообще всегда стараются выяснить, католик ты или нет, даже если не знают, какая у тебя фамилия.
I knew this one Catholic boy, Louis Shaney, when I was at the Whooton School.	У меня был знакомый католик, Луи Горман, я с ним учился в Хуттонской школе.
He was the first boy I ever met there.	Я с ним там с первым и познакомился.
He and I were sitting in the first two chairs outside the goddam infirmary, the day school opened, waiting for our physicals, and we sort of struck up this conversation about tennis. He was quite interested in tennis, and so was I.	Он очень увлекался теннисом, и я тоже.
He told me he went to the Nationals at Forest Hills every summer, and I told him I did too, and then we talked about certain hot-shot tennis players for quite a while. He knew quite a lot about tennis, for a kid his age.	Для своих лет он здорово разбирался в теннисе.
He really did.	Всерьез интересовался.
Then, after a while, right in the middle of the goddam conversation, he asked me,	И потом ни с того ни с сего посреди разговора спрашивает:
"Did you happen to notice where the Catholic church is in town, by any chance?"	"Ты не знаешь, где тут католическая церковь?"
The thing was, you could tell by the way he asked me that he was trying to find out if I was a Catholic.	Суть была в том, что по его тону я сразу понял: он хочет выяснить, католик я или нет.
He really was.	Узнать хочет.
Not that he was prejudiced or anything, but he just wanted to know.	И дело не в том, что он предпочитал католиков, нет, ему просто хотелось узнать.
He was enjoying the conversation about tennis and all, but you could tell he would've enjoyed it more if I was a Catholic and all.	Он с удовольствием разговаривал про теннис, но сразу было видно - ему этот разговор доставил бы еще больше удовольствия, если б он узнал, что я католик.
That kind of stuff drives me crazy.	Меня такие штуки просто бесят.
I'm not saying it ruined our conversation or anything--it didn't--but it sure as hell didn't do it any good.	Я не хочу сказать, что из-за этого весь наш разговор пошел к чертям, нет, разговор продолжался, но как-то не так.
That's why I was glad those two nuns didn't ask me if I was a Catholic.	Вот почему я был рад, что монахини меня не спросили, католик я или нет.
It wouldn't have spoiled the conversation if they had, but it would've been different, probably.	Может быть, это и не помешало бы нашему разговору, но все-таки было бы иначе.
