"Yes--I'm making it.	- Да, я его сейчас нагоняю.
Feel it again."	Потрогай еще раз!
I felt it again, and I still didn't feel anything, but I said,	Я опять приложил руку и опять ничего не почувствовал, но все-таки сказал:
"I think it's starting to, now."	- Как будто начинается.
I didn't want her to get a goddam inferiority complex.	- Не хотелось, чтоб у нее развилось что-то вроде этого самого комплекса неполноценности.
She nodded.	Она кивнула.
"I can make it go up to over the thermoneter."	- Я могу нагнать даже на термометре!
"Thermometer.	- На тер-мо-мет-ре?
Who said so?"	Кто тебе показал?
"Alice Holmborg showed me how.	- Алиса Голмборг меня научила.
You cross your legs and hold your breath and think of something very, very hot.	Надо скрестить ноги и думать про что-нибудь очень-очень жаркое.
A radiator or something.	Например, про радиатор.
Then your whole forehead gets so hot you can burn somebody's hand."	И весь лоб начинает так гореть, что кому-нибудь можно обжечь руку!
That killed me.	Я чуть не расхохотался.
I pulled my hand away from her forehead, like I was in terrific danger.	Нарочно отдернул от нее руку, как будто боялся обжечься.
"Thanks for telling me," I said.	- Спасибо, что предупредила! - говорю.
"Oh, I wouldn't've burned your hand.	- Нет, я бы тебя не обожгла!
I'd've stopped before it got too--Shhh!"	Я бы остановилась заранее - тс-с!
Then, quick as hell, she sat way the hell up in bed.	- И она вдруг привскочила на кровати.
She scared hell out of me when she did that.	Я страшно испугался.
"What's the matter?" I said.	- Что такое?
"The front door!" she said in this loud whisper.	- Дверь входная! - говорит она громким шепотом.
"It's them!"	- Они!
I quick jumped up and ran over and turned off the light over the desk.	Я вскочил, подбежал к столу, выключил лампу.
Then I jammed out my cigarette on my shoe and put it in my pocket.	Потом потушил сигарету, сунул окурок в карман.
Then I fanned hell out of the air, to get the smoke out--I shouldn't even have been smoking, for God's sake.	Помахал рукой, чтоб развеять дым, - и зачем я только курил тут, черт бы меня драл!
Then I grabbed my shoes and got in the closet and shut the door.	Потом схватил башмаки, забрался в стенной шкаф и закрыл дверцы.
Boy, my heart was beating like a bastard.	Сердце у меня колотилось как проклятое.
I heard my mother come in the room.	Я услышал, как вошла мама.
