Standing, as it were, apart with her on the edge of his grave, not all the staring curiosity that looked on, could, for the moment, nerve him to remain quite still.	Точно он стоял вдвоем с ней на краю вырытой для него могилы и все это жадно устремленное на него любопытство сейчас уже было бессильно заставить его держаться с прежним спокойствием.
His hurried right hand parcelled out the herbs before him into imaginary beds of flowers in a garden; and his efforts to control and steady his breathing shook the lips from which the colour rushed to his heart.	Его правая рука судорожно перебирала лежащие перед ним сухие травы, раскладывая их узором цветочной грядки в саду. Тщетно силясь сдержать прерывистое дыханье, он стискивал дрожащие губы, и вся кровь, отхлынув от них, приливала к его сердцу.
The buzz of the great flies was loud again.	А большие синие мухи снова зажужжали над ним.
"Miss Manette, have you seen the prisoner before?"	- Мисс Манетт, вы когда-нибудь видели подсудимого раньше?
"Yes, sir."	- Да, сэр.
"Where?"	- Где?
"On board of the packet-ship just now referred to, sir, and on the same occasion."	- На том самом пакетботе, о котором здесь только что говорили, и во время того же переезда.
"You are the young lady just now referred to?"	- Вы и есть та юная леди, о которой упоминал свидетель?
"O! most unhappily, I am!"	- Да, к великому моему несчастью, это я.
The plaintive tone of her compassion merged into the less musical voice of the Judge, as he said something fiercely:	Жалобный мелодичный голос замер, и раздался резкий отрывистый окрик судьи:
"Answer the questions put to you, and make no remark upon them."	- Воздержитесь от неуместных замечаний, извольте отвечать на вопросы, которые вам задают.
"Miss Manette, had you any conversation with the prisoner on that passage across the Channel?"	- Мисс Манетт, вы разговаривали с подсудимым во время путешествия?
"Yes, sir."	- Да, сэр.
"Recall it."	- Припомните, о чем у вас был разговор.
In the midst of a profound stillness, she faintly began:	В мертвой тишине, наступившей в зале, она заговорила тихим голосом:

"When the prisoner came on board, he noticed that my father," turning her eyes lovingly to him as he stood beside her, "was much fatigued and in a very weak state of health.	- Когда подсудимый взошел на корабль, он сразу заметил, что мой отец, - она окинула любящим взором стоящего рядом отца, - изнемог от усталости и что ему плохо.
