I paid for my coffee and grappa and I watched the people going by in the light from the window.	Я уплатил за стакан кофе с граппой и смотрел, как люди идут мимо в полосе света от окна.
I saw Catherine and knocked on the window.	Я увидел Кэтрин и постучал в окно.
She looked, saw me and smiled, and I went out to meet her.	Она глянула, увидела меня и улыбнулась, и я вышел ей навстречу.
She was wearing a dark blue cape and a soft felt hat.	На ней был темно-синий плащ и мягкая фетровая шляпа.
We walked along together, along the sidewalk past the wine shops, then across the market square and up the street and through the archway to the cathedral square.	Мы вместе пошли по тротуару мимо винных погребков, потом через рыночную площадь и дальше по улице и, пройдя под аркой, вышли на соборную площадь.
There were streetcar tracks and beyond them was the cathedral.	Ее пересекали трамвайные рельсы, а за ними был собор.
It was white and wet in the mist.	Он был белый и мокрый в тумане.
We crossed the tram tracks.	Мы перешли рельсы.
On our left were the shops, their windows lighted, and the entrance to the galleria.	Слева от нас были магазины с освещенными витринами и вход в Galleria.
There was a fog in the square and when we came close to the front of the cathedral it was very big and the stone was wet.	Над площадью туман сгущался, и собор вблизи был очень большой, а камень стен мокрый.
"Would you like to go in?"	- Хочешь, войдем?
"No," Catherine said.	- Нет, - сказала Кэтрин.
We walked along.	Мы пошли дальше.
There was a soldier standing with his girl in the shadow of one of the stone buttresses ahead of us and we passed them.	В тени одного из каменных контрфорсов стоял солдат с девушкой, и мы прошли мимо них.
They were standing tight up against the stone and he had put his cape around her.	Они стояли, вплотную прижавшись к стене, и он укрыл ее своим плащом.
"They're like us," I said.	- Они похожи на нас, - сказал я.
"Nobody is like us," Catherine said.	- Никто не похож на нас, - сказала Кэтрин.
She did not mean it happily.	Она думала не о радостном.
"I wish they had some place to go."	- Им даже пойти некуда.
"It mightn't do them any good."	- Может быть, так для них лучше.
"I don't know.	- Не знаю.
Everybody ought to have some place to go."	Все-таки нужно, чтоб у каждого было куда пойти.
"They have the cathedral," Catherine said.	- У них есть собор, - сказала Кэтрин.
We were past it now.	Мы уже миновали его.
We crossed the far end of the square and looked back at the cathedral.	Мы перешли на другую сторону и оглянулись на собор.
It was fine in the mist.	Он был красивый в тумане.
