The President Is No More/Президента больше нет

Why would I forget this fact? Who did he think I was? Oh, to heck with him… The feeling of a full stomach was so pleasant that I just had to yawn. Twice. But I didn’t want to fall into Morpheus’ embrace just yet. So instead, I turned on the TV. The news — that’s what I needed. In my line of work, getting behind on life was a luxury I couldn’t afford. 

Впрочем, телевизор включился на ток-шоу, посвященном использованию роботов. Я в один момент забыла о новостях, потому что гостем программы был глава Роботикс Вильям Ботс.

— …пример, когда робот оказался незаменимым, — услышала я окончание фразы.

The TV was playing talk show dedicated to using robots. I quickly forgot about the news when I saw that the guest was none other than Robotics head William Bots.

“…for example, when robot happened to be unreplaced,” I heard the ending of a phrase.

Ботс вальяжно развалился на диване рядом с ведущим. Пожалуй, если убрать с его лица вот эту самодовольную улыбку, он мог бы мне показаться симпатичным. Но, увы, это выражение всегда было при нем.

Bots sprawled across the couch next to the talk show host. Come to think of it, if someone were to wipe that self-satisfied smile off his face, I could’ve found him attractive. But, alas, he always wore that expression.

— Но все же начну я издалека, — продолжал он. — В одной семье задумались о ребенке. Будущие родители серьезно отнеслись к вопросу и решили, что чадо должно появиться на свет с помощью репродуктивных технологий. Анализ ДНК позволил выбрать из нескольких эмбрионов: взяли того, который имел самый большой умственный потенциал.

“But let me start a bit further back,” he continued. “One family was thinking about having a child. The would-be parents approached the question seriously and decided that their child had to appear in this world with the help of reproductive technologies. The DNA analysis allowed them to choose from several embryos — they picked the one that had the greatest intelligence potential.

Все шло прекрасно, и мальчик родился здоровым. Но к двум годам стало очевидно, что ребенок не хочет разговаривать и совсем не понимает речь. Случилось то, о чем не подумали эмбриологи: умственный потенциал не зависел напрямую от способностей к социальным функциям, к которым также относится речь! Родители были уверены, что получают самого умного ребенка из возможных, а в реальности все оказалось наоборот: мальчик отставал в развитии.

Everything went swimmingly, and the boy was born healthy. But by the time he turned two, it was obvious that he didn’t want to talk and couldn’t understand speech. What happened was something embryologists haven’t considered — the intelligence potential didn’t directly depend on ability to function socially, which included speech! The parents were confident that they’re getting smartest child possible, when, in reality, the opposite happened — the boy was behind developmentally.

Не передать словами, как они расстроились! Оказалось, что есть только один метод помочь сыну: его необходимо обучать так интенсивно, что этот процесс точнее было бы назвать дрессировкой.  Только тогда после нескольких лет труда у него будет шанс хоть как-то вписаться в общество. Заниматься с ребенком надо было дни напролет, однако ни мама, ни папа не хотели покидать свою работу.
