The President Is No More/Президента больше нет

Then there was music, official speeches and two hundred people looking curiously in my direction. I think the wife of the Russian president was the most surprised. I noticed that, when she saw me next to Bill Freeman, she whispered something to her husband. What a shocking development! Although, come to think of it, it was. It really was! The President never appeared in public with a woman. This was the first time. And that lady was me. Amazing!

Меня представили президентской чете и многим другим, но моего серого вещества — а может быть нервов!–  не хватило на то, чтобы сходу запомнить имена. Когда мы, наконец, оказались за столом, я облегченно вздохнула. Но тут же удивилась, что, разговаривая с русскими, президент Фримэн легко перешел на русский язык. Я и так сбилась со счета, сколько иностранных языков он знает, а тут еще один!

I was introduced to the presidential entourage and many other people, but I didn’t have enough gray matter — or perhaps nerves — to remember anybody’s names. When we finally took seats at the table, I breathed a sigh of relief. Only to be immediately surprised when, while talking to the Russians, President Freeman easily switched to Russian. I already lost count of how many foreign languages he knew, and now, there was another one!

Но вдруг Фримэн спохватился:

— Извините, Мия, вы, наверное, не понимаете нас.

— Нет, к великому сожалению, я не говорю по-русски, — извинилась я.

Then Freeman caught himself.

“I’m sorry, Mia — you probably don’t understand us.”

“No. Unfortunately, I don’t speak Russian,” I apologized

— Вы говорите по-французски? — спросила супруга российского президента.

И мы все вчетвером перешли на французский. Казалось, что Билу Фримэну было все равно, на каком языке разговаривать. Беседа вначале была светской, мы даже коснулись темы погоды. Но кто-то упомянул трагедию в Кингтуане.

“Do you speak French?” asked the Russian president’s wife.

And so the four of us switched to French. It felt as if it didn’t matter to Bill Freeman, what language we spoke. The conversation started out perfectly casual — we even touched on the weather. But then, somebody mentioned the Kingstown tragedy.

— Мне сообщили, что это был поджог, — сказал российский президент.

— Да, на месте трагедии найдены остатки двух роботов! — подтвердил Фримэн.

“I was informed that it was arson,” said the Russian president.

“Yes, they found the remains of two robots at the site of the fire,” confirmed Freeman.

Эта новость не была для меня сюрпризом. Там, в госпитале, я поверила Ти, ведь он был свидетелем событий. Кстати, я думаю, что мальчик выжил лишь потому, что погнался за роботом. Такой вот парадокс… Значит, пока я сидела взаперти, летела в самолете и наряжалась к приему, полиция успела отреагировать на мой звонок. Это хорошо!

The news wasn’t a surprise to me. Back at the hospital, I believed Tee, and he was a witness. Thinking back, I thought that he only survived because he chased after the robots. What a paradox… So that means that, while I was locked up, flew the plane and got dressed up for the reception, the police responded to my call. That was great!
