The President Is No More/Президента больше нет

I nodded. He smiled so sincerely that I took it as an answer.

“So Yvon Tred was mistaken…” I thought aloud.

“Tred?” he asked. “The one who’s putting together the Humanist Party?”

Партию? Я этого не знала! Надо будет поразмыслить потом, что это значит.

— Постойте, Бил, — вдруг пришло мне на ум, — чтобы уничтожить весь Кингтаун, надо было поджечь его одновременно с разных сторон. А значит, роботов должно было быть не два, а по крайней мере двадцать!

A party? I had no idea. I’d have to think about what it means later.

“Hold on, Bill,” I suddenly realized. “In order to burn down the entire Kingstown, they needed to start the fire from several sides. That means that they needed more than two robots — they needed at least twenty!”

— Пожалуй, вы правы, — кивнул он. — Вероятно, остальным удалось покинуть место действия.

Он был здесь, рядом и, к тому же, улыбался. Не кому-нибудь, а мне! Да, приходится признать: президент так и оставался для меня эталоном мужчины…

“You’re probably right,” he nodded. “The others probably managed to leave the scene.”

He was right here, right next to me, and he was smiling. And not just at anyone — at me! Yeah, I had to admit — the President was still my ideal man.

— Могу ли я попросить вас об одолжении? — продолжила я. — Нельзя ли прямо сейчас позвонить куда-нибудь… В ФБР, наверное. И попросить их проверить всех, кто делал в последнее время подобные покупки?

— Я, кажется, понимаю ход ваших мыслей, Мия.

“Can I ask you a favor?” I continued. “Is there a way you call somewhere… FBI, probably. And ask to check everyone who purchased this type of robots recently?”

“I think I understand where you’re going with this, Mia.”

— Кстати, я так и не спросила, как вы нашли меня?

— Элементарно! По GPS!

— Так это же позапрошлый век! — удивлению моему не было предела. — Значит, мой захватчик не подумал о том, чтобы выключить мой телефон?

“By the way, I never got a chance to ask you — how did you find me?”

“Oh, that’s easy! With GPS!”

“That’s something from two centuries ago!” my surprise was boundless. “So my kidnapper didn’t think to turn off my phone!”

— Или забыл! — засмеялся президент. — Кстати, завтра мои службы ожидают большие волнения против роботов. По всей стране. Будет трудный день, а вы мне еще можете пригодиться… так что я распорядился, чтобы вам приготовили комнату здесь, в Белом доме.

“Or forgot!” the President chuckled. “By the way, the Secret Service is expecting major anti-robot activity across the entire country. It will be a hard day, and you might still be useful to me… So I ordered to have my people prepare you a room here in the White House.”

А я-то думала, что уже ничему не удивлюсь!

— Джейн вас проводит, — сказал он, поднимаясь, и вышел в западную дверь.

And there I thought nothing could surprise me anymore!

“Jane will escort you,” he said as he got up and left through the western door.

5. Откровение президента The President’s Confession

Я спала крепко, как младенец. И утро началось прекрасно: тихо постучавшись, Джейн принесла мне ароматный кофе, овсянку и клубнику.

— Ты умеешь читать мысли? — улыбнулась я андроиду.

I slept like a baby. The morning began beautifully: after knocking quietly, Jane brought me an aromatic coffee, a bowl of oatmeal and strawberries.
