Узорный покров (The Painted Veil)

The children were playing some romping game and it was her habit to look on with an indulgent smile, restraining them when they made too much noise and taking care that in their boisterousness none was hurt; but now in her high spirits, feeling as young as any of them, she joined in the game. They chased up and down the room, shouting at the top of their shrill voices, with fantastic and almost barbarous glee.	Они гонялись за ней по всей комнате, пронзительно крича от непонятной, почти дикарской радости.
They grew so excited that they leaped into the air with joy.	От возбуждения они прыгали и топали ногами.

Suddenly the door opened and the Mother Superior stood on the threshold.	И вдруг отворилась дверь и на пороге выросла настоятельница.
Kitty, abashed, extricated herself from the clutches of a dozen little girls who with wild shrieks had seized her.	Китти страшно сконфузилась и с трудом высвободилась из десятка вцепившихся в нее маленьких рук.
"Is this how you keep these children good and quiet?" asked the Mother Superior, a smile on her lips.	- Так-то вы стараетесь, чтобы дети вели себя тихо? - спросила настоятельница с улыбкой.
"We were having a game, Mother.	- Мы играли, ma m?re.
They got excited.	Они разволновались.
It is my fault, I led them on."	Это я виновата. Я их взбудоражила.
The Mother Superior came forward and as usual the children clustered about her.	Настоятельница вошла в комнату, и дети, как всегда, окружили ее.
She put her hands round their narrow shoulders and playfully pulled their little yellow ears.	Она обнимала их за узенькие плечи, теребила их желтые ушки.
She looked at Kitty with a long, soft look.	Посмотрела на Китти долгим ласковым взглядом.
Kitty was flushed and she was breathing quickly.	Китти раскраснелась, часто дышала.
Her liquid eyes were shining and her lovely hair, disarranged in all the struggling and the laughter, was in adorable confusion.	Ее влажные глаза сияли, чудесные волосы растрепались.
"Que vousetes belle, ma chere enfant," said the Mother Superior. "It does the heart good to look at you.	- Как вы прелестны, дитя мое, - сказала настоятельница. - Сердце радуется, на вас глядя.
No wonder these children adore you."	Немудрено, что дети вас обожают.
Kitty blushed deeply and, she knew not why, tears suddenly filled her eyes.	Китти покраснела еще гуще, и почему-то слезы брызнули у нее из глаз.
She covered her face with her hands.	Она закрыла лицо руками.
"Oh, Mother, you make me ashamed."	- О, ma m?re, мне стыдно.
"Come, do not be silly.	- Полно, какие глупости.
