Узорный покров (The Painted Veil)

"Come, let us lift you," said the Mother Superior. "You will be more comfortable on the chaise longue.	- Давайте-ка мы вас поднимем, - сказала настоятельница. - В шезлонге вам будет удобнее.
Do you think you can stand?"	На ногах вы стоите?
She put her hands under Kitty's arms and Sister St Joseph helped her to her feet.	Она подхватила Китти под мышки, сестра Сен-Жозеф помогла ей встать.
She sank exhausted into the chair.	Она без сил опустилась в кресло.
"I had better shut the window," said Sister St Joseph. "The early morning air cannot be good for her."	- Я лучше закрою окно, - сказала сестра Сен-Жозеф. - Ну как утренний воздух ей повредит.
"No, no," said Kitty. "Please leave it open."	- Нет-нет, - взмолилась Китти. - Пожалуйста, не закрывайте.
It gave her confidence to see the blue sky.	Хорошо было увидеть синее небо.
She was shaken, but certainly she began to feel better.	Ее еще трясло, но ей безусловно стало лучше.
The two nuns looked at her for a moment in silence, and Sister St Joseph said something to the Mother Superior which she could not understand.	Обе монахини смотрели на нее, потом сестра Сен-Жо-зеф сказала настоятельнице что-то, чего Китти не разобрала.
Then the Mother Superior sat on the side of the chair and took her hand.	Потом настоятельница села с ней рядом и взяла ее за руку.
"Listen, ma chere enfant..."	- Послушайте, дитя мое...
She asked her one or two questions.	Она задала ей кой-какие вопросы.
Kitty answered them without knowing what they meant.	Китти отвечала, не понимая их смысла.
Her lips were trembling so that she could hardly frame the words.	Губы у нее дрожали и не слушались.
"There is no doubt about it," said Sister St Joseph. "I am not one to be deceived in such a matter."	- И сомневаться нечего, - сказала сестра Сен-Жозеф. - Меня в этих делах не обманешь.
She gave a little laugh in which Kitty seemed to discern a certain excitement and not a little affection.	Она залилась смехом, в котором Китти послышалось и радостное волнение, и участие.
The Mother Superior, still holding Kitty's hand, smiled with soft tenderness.	Настоятельница, все еще держа Китти за руку, улыбнулась с нескрываемой нежностью.
"Sister St Joseph has more experience of these things than I have, dear child, and she said at once what was the matter with you.	- Сестра Сен-Жозеф разбирается в этом лучше меня, дитя мое, она сразу определила, что с вами такое.
She was evidently quite right."	И очевидно, не ошиблась.
"What do you mean?" asked Kitty anxiously.	- А что со мной? - встрепенулась Китти.
"It is quite evident.	- Все ясно как день.
Did the possibility of such a thing never occur to you?	Неужели такая возможность не приходила вам в голову?
You are with child, my dear."	Вы беременны.
The start that Kitty gave shook her from head to foot, and she put her feet to the ground as though to springup.	Китти как на пружине подкинуло. Она спустила ноги на пол, готовая вскочить.
