They came to the bank and there, with a thread of light at the bow, a sampan was waiting for them.	На пристани их ждал сампан с фонариком на носу.
"Is it cholera?" she said then.	Тут она спросила: - Это холера?
"I'm afraid so."	- Видимо, так.
She gave a little cry and stopped short.	Она вскрикнула и остановилась.
"I think you ought to come as quickly as you can." He gave her his hand to help her into the boat.	- Не будем задерживаться, пошли. - Он шагнул в лодку и подал ей руку.
The passage was short and the river almost stagnant; they stood in a bunch at the bow, while a woman with a child tied on her hip with one oar impelled the sampan across.	Переправа была недолгая, они сгрудились на носу, а перевозчица с привязанным к бедру младенцем одним веслом погнала лодку по неподвижной воде.
"He was taken ill this afternoon, the afternoon of yesterday that is," said Waddington.	- Он заболел сегодня днем, - сказал Уоддингтон. -Вернее, вчера днем.

Although there was no reason for it they spoke in whispers.	Таиться было не от кого, но они говорили шепотом.

Waddington made no reply. "Why am I allowed to come now?"	Уоддингтон не ответил. - А почему теперь меня вызвали?

You must be prepared for the worst."	Нужно быть готовой к самому худшему.
She gave a wail of anguish and turned away a little, for she saw that the three Chinese soldiers were looking at her.	Она громко застонала и тут же отвернулась, заметив, что солдаты на нее смотрят.
She had a sudden strange glimpse of the whites of their eyes.	Глаза их таинственно блеснули во мраке.
"Is he dying?"	- Он умирает?
