He lifted her off her feet, she was very light in his arms, he carried her and she clung to him, desperate and adoring; her head sank on the pillow and his lips clung to hers. SHE sat on the edge of the bed hiding her face with her hands.	Она сидела на краю постели, закрыв лицо руками.
"Would you like a drop of water?"	- Воды хочешь?
She shook her head.	Она помотала головой.
He went over to the washing-stand, filled the tooth-glass and brought it to her.	Он подошел к умывальнику, налил в стакан воды и принес ей.
"Come along, have a little drink and you'll feel better."	- На-ка выпей, тебе станет лучше.
He put the glass to her lips and she sipped the water. Then, with horrified eyes, she stared at him.	Он поднес стакан к ее губам, она отпила немного, а потом в ужасе воззрилась на него.
He was standing over her, looking down, and in his eyes was a twinkle of self-satisfaction.	Он стоял, глядя на нее сверху, и в глазах его поблескивал самодовольный огонек.
"Well, do you think I'm such a dirty dog as you did?" he asked.	- Ну что, ты все еще считаешь меня негодяем?
She looked down.	Она опустила глаза.
"Yes. But I know that I'm not a bit better than you.	- Да, но я знаю, что и сама не лучше.
Oh, I'm so ashamed."	Мне так стыдно.
"Well, I think you're very ungrateful."	- По-моему, ты очень неблагодарна.
"Will you go now?"	- Теперь ты уйдешь?
"To tell you the truth I think it's about time.	- По правде говоря, пора.
I'll just go and tidy up before Dorothy comes in."	Надо привести себя в порядок, пока Дороти не вернулась.
He went out of the room with a jaunty step.	И вышел из комнаты пружинистой походкой.
Kitty sat for a while, still on the edge of the bed, hunched up like an imbecile.	Китти еще посидела на краю постели, вся сжавшись, как побитый щенок.
Her mind was vacant.	В голове было пусто.
A shudder passed through her.	Ее пробрал озноб.
She staggered to her feet and, going to the dressing-table, sank into a chair.	Она с трудом встала на ноги и рухнула в кресло перед туалетным столом.
She stared at herself in the glass.	Погляделась в зеркало.
Her eyes were swollen with tears; her face was stained and there was a red mark on one cheek where his had rested.	Глаза опухли от слез; лицо в красных пятнах.
She looked at herself with horror.	Оно внушало ужас.
It was the same face.	Но это было ее лицо.
