SHE looked at him blankly.	Она смотрела на него, не понимая.
What he said was so unexpected that at the first moment she could hardly gather its sense.	Так неожиданны были его слова, что она не сразу уловила их смысл.
"What on earth are you talking about?" she faltered.	- Ты о чем? - еле выговорила она.
Even to herself her reply rang false, and she saw the look of disdain which it called forth on Walter's stern face.	Даже для нее самой это прозвучало фальшиво, а суровое лицо Уолтера выразило презрение.
"I'm afraid you've thought me a bigger fool than I am."	- Ты, видно, считала меня совсем уж круглым дураком.
She did not quite know what to say.	Что на это сказать?
She was undecided whether indignantly to assert her innocence or to break out into angry reproaches.	Она колебалась - то ли изобразить оскорбленную невинность, то ли возмутиться, осыпать его гневными упреками.
He seemed to read her thoughts.	Он словно прочел ее мысли.
"I've got all the proof necessary."	- Все необходимые доказательства у меня есть.
She began to cry.	Она заплакала.
The tears flowed from her eyes without any particular anguish and she did not dry them: to weep gave her a little time to collect herself.	Слезы лились по щекам, это были легкие слезы, и она не отирала их, выгадывала время, собиралась с мыслями.
But her mind was blank.	Но мыслей не было.
He watched her without concern, and his calmness frightened her.	Он смотрел на нее совершенно спокойно. Это ее пугало.
He grew impatient.	Он стал терять терпение.
"You're not going to do much by crying, you know."	- Слезами, знаешь ли, горю не поможешь.
His voice, so cold and hard, had the effect of exciting in her a certain indignation.	Его голос, сухой, холодный, пробудил в ней дух протеста.
She was recovering her nerve.	К ней возвращалось самообладание.
"I don't care.	- Мне все равно.
I suppose you have no objection to my divorcing you.	Ты, надеюсь, не будешь возражать, если я с тобой разведусь.
It means nothing to a man."	Для мужчины это ничего не значит.
"Will you allow me to ask why I should put myself to the smallest inconvenience on your account?"	- Разреши спросить, с какой стати мне ради тебя подвергать себя каким-либо неудобствам?
