He put his hand in his pocket, failed to find what he wanted, and rushing past me went blundering noisily and pugnaciously downstairs.	Не найдя там того, что искал, он шумно бросился мимо меня вниз.
But I did not follow him. I sat on the head of the staircase until his return.	Но я за ним не последовал, а уселся на верхней ступеньке лестницы и стал ждать его возвращения.
"Presently he came up again, still muttering.	Вскоре он появился снова, все еще что-то бормоча.
He opened the door of the room, and before I could enter, slammed it in my face.	Он открыл дверь, но, прежде чем я успел войти, захлопнул ее перед моим носом.
"I resolved to explore the house, and spent some time in doing so as noiselessly as possible. The house was very old and tumble-down, damp so that the paper in the attics was peeling from the walls, and rat infested. Some of the door handles were stiff and I was afraid to turn them.	Почти все дверные ручки поворачивались очень туго, и я боялся их трогать.
Several rooms I did inspect were unfurnished, and others were littered with theatrical lumber, bought second-hand, I judged, from its appearance.	Некоторые комнаты были совсем без мебели, а другие завалены театральным хламом, купленным, если судить по его виду, из вторых рук.
In one room next to his I found a lot of old clothes.	В небольшой комнате рядом со спальней я нашел ворох старого платья.
I began routing among these, and in my eagerness forgot again the evident sharpness of his ears.	Я стал нетерпеливо рыться в нем и, увлекшись, забыл о тонком слухе хозяина.
I heard a stealthy footstep and, looking up just in time, saw him peering in at the tumbled heap and holding an old-fashioned revolver in his hand.	Я услышал крадущиеся шаги и поднял голову как раз вовремя: хозяин появился на пороге со старым револьвером в руке и уставился на развороченную кучу платья.
I stood perfectly still while he stared about open-mouthed and suspicious.	Я стоял, не шевелясь, все время, пока он с разинутым ртом подозрительно оглядывал комнату:
' It must have been her,' he said slowly.	"Должно быть, это она, - пробормотал он.
' Damn her!'	- Черт бы ее побрал!"
"He shut the door quietly, and immediately I heard the key turn in the lock.	Он бесшумно закрыл дверь и сейчас же запер ее на ключ.
Then his footsteps retreated.	Я услышал его удаляющиеся шаги.
I realised abruptly that I was locked in.	И вдруг я понял, что заперт.
For a minute I did not know what to do.	В первую минуту я растерялся.
I walked from door to window and back, and stood perplexed.	Прошел от двери к окну и обратно, остановился, не зная, что делать.
A gust of anger came upon me.	Меня охватило бешенство.
But I decided to inspect the clothes before I did anything further, and my first attempt brought down a pile from an upper shelf.	Но я решил прежде всего осмотреть платье, и первая же моя попытка стащить узел с верхней полки снова привлекла хозяина.
