Человек-невидимка (The Invisible Man)

I tried myself with a little bedroom looking-glass, inspecting myself from every point of view to discover any forgotten chink, but it all seemed sound.	Я внимательно осмотрел себя в маленьком зеркальце, поворачиваясь то так, то этак, проверяя, не упустил ли я чего-нибудь.
I was grotesque to the theatrical pitch, a stage miser, but I was certainly not a physical impossibility.	Нет, как будто все в порядке: фигура, конечно, гротескная, вроде театрального нищего, но общий вид сносный, бывают и такие люди.
Gathering confidence, I took my looking-glass down into the shop, pulled down the shop blinds, and surveyed myself from every point of view with the help of the cheval glass in the corner.	Немного успокоенный, я сошел с зеркальцем в лавку, опустил занавески и снова осмотрел себя со всех сторон в трюмо.
"I spent some minutes screwing up my courage and then unlocked the shop door and marched out into the street, leaving the little man to get out of his sheet again when he liked.	Несколько минут я собирался с духом, наконец отпер дверь и вышел на улицу, предоставив маленькому горбуну собственными силами выбираться из простыни.
In five minutes a dozen turnings intervened between me and the costumier's shop.	Сначала я сворачивал за угол на каждом перекрестке.
No one appeared to notice me very pointedly.	Мой вид не привлекал ничьего внимания.
My last difficulty seemed overcome."	Казалось, я перешагнул через последнее препятствие.
He stopped again.	Он замолчал.
"And you troubled no more about the hunchback?" said Kemp.	- А горбуна вы так и бросили на произвол судьбы? - спросил Кемп.
"No," said the Invisible Man.	- Да, - сказал Невидимка.
"Nor have I heard what became of him.	- Не знаю, что с ним сталось.
I suppose he untied himself or kicked himself out.	Вероятно, он развязал простыню, вернее, разорвал ее.
The knots were pretty tight."	Узлы были крепкие.
He became silent and went to the window and stared out.	Он снова замолчал, поднялся и стал смотреть в окно.
"What happened when you went out into the Strand?"	- Ну, а потом вы вышли на Стрэнд и что же дальше?
"Oh!-disillusionment again.	- О, снова разочарование!
I thought my troubles were over.	Я думал, что мытарства мои кончились.
Practically I thought I had impunity to do whatever I chose, everything-save to give away my secret.	Воображал, что теперь я могу безнаказанно делать все, что вздумается, если только сохраню свою тайну.
So I thought.	Так мне казалось.
Whatever I did, whatever the consequences might be, was nothing to me. I had merely to fling aside my garments and vanish.	Я мог делать все что угодно, не считаясь с последствиями: стоило только скинуть платье, чтоб исчезнуть.
No person could hold me.	Задержать меня никто не мог.
I could take my money where I found it.	Деньги можно брать где угодно.
