A resounding smash of glass came from upstairs.	Сверху донесся звон разбитого стекла.
Adye had a silvery glimpse of a little revolver half out of Kemp's pocket.	Эдай заметил маленький револьвер, торчавший из кармана Кемпа.
"It's a window, upstairs!" said Kemp, and led the wayup.	- Это в кабинете! - сказал Кемп и первый стал подниматься по лестнице.
There came a second smash while they were still on the staircase.	Еще не дойдя до верха, они опять услышали звон.
When they reached the study they found two of the three windows smashed, half the room littered with splintered glass, and one big flint lying on the writing table.	В кабинете они увидели, что два окна из трех разбиты, пол усеян осколками, а на письменном столе лежит большой булыжник.
The two men stopped in the doorway, contemplating the wreckage.	Оба остановились на пороге, глядя на разрушение.
Kemp swore again, and as he did so the third window went with a snap like a pistol, hung starred for a moment, and collapsed in jagged, shivering triangles into the room.	Кемп снова выругался, и в ту же минуту третье окно треснуло, точно выстрелили из пистолета, и на пол со звоном посыпались осколки.
"What's this for?" said Adye.	- Зачем это? - сказал Эдай.
"It's a beginning," said Kemp.	- Это начало, - ответил Кемп.
"There's no way of climbing up here?"	- А влезть сюда нет никакой возможности?
"Not for a cat," said Kemp.	- Даже кошка не влезет, - сказал Кемп.
"No shutters?"	- Ставен нет?
"Not here.	- Здесь нет.
All the downstairs rooms-Hullo!"	Во всех нижних комнатах... Ого!
Smash, and then whack of boards hit hard came from downstairs.	Снизу донесся звон стекла и треск досок от сильного удара.
"Confound him!" said Kemp. "That must be-yes-it's one of the bedrooms.	- Это, должно быть... да, это в спальне.
He's going to do all the house.	Он собирается обработать весь дом.
But he's a fool.	Дурак он.
The shutters are up, and the glass will fall outside.	Ставни закрыты, и стекло будет падать наружу.
He'll cut his feet."	Он изрежет себе ноги.
Another window proclaimed its destruction.	Еще одно окно разлетелось вдребезги.
