Человек-невидимка (The Invisible Man)

"I want that man Kemp."	- Мне нужен Кемп.
"We want you," said the first policeman, making a quick step forward and wiping with his poker at the Voice.	- А нам нужны вы, - сказал первый полисмен и, выступив вперед, ударил кочергой в направлении Голоса.
The Invisible Man must have started back, and he blundered into the umbrella stand.	Но Невидимке удалось уклониться от удара, и кочерга попала в стойку для зонтиков.
Then, as the policeman staggered with the swing of the blow he had aimed, the Invisible Man countered with the axe, the helmet crumpled like paper, and the blow sent the man spinning to the floor at the head of the kitchen stairs.	Полисмен едва устоял на ногах, и в ту же минуту топор стукнул его по голове, смяв каску, словно она была из бумаги, и он кубарем вылетел на кухонную лестницу.
But the second policeman, aiming behind the axe with his poker, hit something soft that snapped.	Но второй полисмен ударил кочергой позади топора и попал во что-то мягкое.
There was a sharp exclamation of pain and then the axe fell to the ground.	Раздался крик боли, и топор упал на пол.
The policeman wiped again at vacancy and hit nothing; he put his foot on the axe, and struck again.	Полисмен ударил опять, но попал в пустоту; потом он наступил ногой на топор и ударил еще раз.
Then he stood, poker clubbed, listening intent for the slightest movement.	Затем, держа кочергу наготове, стал внимательно прислушиваться, стараясь уловить какое-нибудь движение.
He heard the dining-room window open, and a quick rush of feet within.	Он услышал, как раскрылось окно в столовой и затем раздались быстрые шаги.
His companion rolled over and sat up, with the blood running down between his eye and ear.	Товарищ его приподнялся и сел; кровь текла у него по щеке.
"Where is he?" asked the man on the floor.	-Где он? - спросил раненый.
"Don't know.	- Не знаю.
I've hit him.	Я зацепил его.
He's standing somewhere in the hall. Unless he's slipped past you.	Стоит где-нибудь в прихожей, если только не шмыгнул мимо тебя.
Doctor Kemp-sir."	Доктор Кемп! Сэр!..
Pause.	Никакого ответа.
"Doctor Kemp," cried the policeman again.	- Доктор Кемп! - снова позвал полисмен.
The second policeman began struggling to his feet.	Раненый стал медленно подниматься на ноги.
He stood up.	Наконец ему это удалось.
Suddenly the faint pad of bare feet on the kitchen stairs could be heard.	Вдруг с кухонной лестницы донеслось шлепанье босых ног.
"Yap!" cried the first policeman, and incontinently flung his poker. It smashed a little gas bracket.	-Гоп!- крикнул первый полисмен и метнул кочергу: она расплющила газовый рожок.
He made as if he would pursue the Invisible Man downstairs. Then he thought better of it and stepped into the dining-room.	Он пустился было преследовать Невидимку, но потом раздумал и вошел в столовую.
