It was October 26^th when we arrived in Lorbrulgrud. The farmer found lodgings on the main street in the centre of the city, not far from the royal palace. He hired a large room, about three or four hundred feet wide, with a very large table in the centre. He had a border made around the edge of the table, about three feet high, to prevent me from falling off. Within a very short time I was giving ten shows a day.

By this time I was able to speak the language quite well (в это время я /уже/ мог довольно хорошо говорить на /местном/ языке) and understand what was said (и понимать, что говорилось).
